Quines: Celebrating Scotland's Women

Sat 17 Oct
20:00 - 22:00
Doors open 19:00

The Bubblyjock Collective present ‘QUINES’, a brand-new programme celebrating female Scottish composers and neglected women from Scottish history. It showcases works by Marie Dare, Isobel Dunlop, Claire Liddell and Helen Hopekirk, as well as a new song-cycle written for the ensemble by Lisa Robertson. This new cycle sets texts by acclaimed poet Gerda Stevenson, sung in the voices of 5 incredible women from Scottish history.

The five women brought to life in the new song cycle are:

  • Mary Garden (1874-1967), born Aberdeen, died Inverurie; world-renowned opera-singer ; the first to create many leading roles in new operas, including those by Debussy, Massenet and Prokofiev
  • Williamina Patting Fleming (1857-1911), born Dundee, died Boston; astronomer; received numerous international honours; her name was eliminated from Harvard’s list of astrological discoveries, denying her credit for discovering Horsehead Nebula
  • Màiri Mhòr nan Òran (1821-98), from the Isle of Skye; Gaelic poet, singer-songwriter, and bard of the Highland Land League; falsely accused and imprisoned for theft
  • Violet Jacob (1863-1946), from the County of Angus; novelist, poet, essayist, short story writer, and botanical artist; travelled widely abroad; her only child, a son, died in WW1
  • Moira Shearer (1926-2006), born Dunfermline, died Oxford; internationally renowned ballerina and actress, famous for her starring role in the legendary ballet film The Red Shoes

We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.

Lovely wee cafe with amazing service. Been here 3 times now and always notice how friendly and upbeat the staff are. The coffee and cake is top notch also. Will definitely be back the next time I head to Dunkeld!
