This small selection of work has been inspired by Adrian Stokes (1902 -1972) series of still life paintings of bottles and jars, called The Last Eleven.

He painted them between September - December 1972 in the last days of his life. As the bottles and jars emerge from a mysterious background, disappearing and reappearing, they speak of a liminal
space, of transitions and the ephemeral.

Flowers too, can represent the ephemeral. In my garden I find much inspiration as plants appear mysteriously from the greenery , partly disappear in the shade and edges disappear fading into the light.

About the artist

Sheila is a local artist working in oils. Her practice is inspired by the natural world, with a special focus of the myriad of changing colours that flowers display over time—from the bud, through full bloom, to decay. Her paintings capture flowers appearing from and disappearing into the background. Through this interplay of presence and absence, she hopes to convey their essential, ephemeral quality as a meditation on the fleeting beauty of life.

We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.
