Niel Gow Festival

Saturday Evening Concert

Part of The Annual Niel Gow Fiddle Festival 2023

18 March 2023

Concert featuring Charlie McKerron & Marc Clement; Dunkeld & District Strathspey & Reel Society; Ryan Young & Owen Sinclair

Charlie McKerron & Marc Clement

One of Scotland’s finest fiddle players Charlie McKerron has played in Capercaillie since 1985 and along with Marc Clement are more recently part of the super group Session A9. Regulars to the festival we are delighted to have them back.

Recently described as a “Wonderful, high octane fiddle player and composer”, Charlie Mckerron has now clocked up 36 years on the road as a professional musician.

As well as touring with Session A9 and Capercaillie , Charlie has recently worked with Zakir Hussain , Celtic Fiddle festival. MBO and The Grit Orchestra. Charlie also has a long history of working with the Feisean movement throughout Scotland and is currently a music and group leader with Feis Spe.

Ryan Young & Owen Sinclair

Ryan Young is a traditional fiddle player from Scotland bringing fresh and inventive ideas to traditional Scottish music. Ryan Young's traditional Scottish fiddle playing will take you on an emotional journey and lift your spirits. Ryan plays mostly traditional Scottish tunes which he brings to life with his 'spellbinding' interpretations on his fiddle.

Ryan graduated with a Master of Music degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and he is drawing international attention. Boston-based music producer Jesse Lewis has produced and recorded (in Scotland) Ryan's debut album of traditional tunes. The album was released in 2017 (and a follow up is being recorded) and you can purchase it by contacting Ryan. This collaboration places Ryan among a list of world-class musicians who have worked with Jesse, including The Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck, Jan Vogler and Brooklyn Rider. This is probably the first UK Traditional album to be recorded in high resolution DSD audio.

Dunkeld Strathspey & Reel" has been an important part of Dunkeld's lively traditional music scene for the past 90 years, has been closely associated with the Niel Gow Festival and, under its music director Pete Clark, is delighted to bring you a programme of great music from the 18th to the 21st centuries, much of it composed locally.
