Join Esther Kent to explore colourful drawing materials and piles of paper! Make your own 3D paper decorations to take home or add to the PLAY exhibition for everyone to enjoy. A playful drop-in family workshop designed for children and adults to get stuck in to together.
This drop-in workshop accompanies an exhibition of work by Esther Kent which explores expressions of play and imagination. Inspired by personal childhood memories and the way in which children so easily blend reality and imaginary wonder, this exhibition brings together mixed media drawings on paper, digital printmaking and 3D paper sculpture to give colourful, energetic glimpses of how it feels to be playful. Visitors to the gallery will be taken on a journey through stories, characters, settings, memories and experiences of play through the enchanting drawings, paintings and collages hand-made by Esther.
This exhibition forms part of an integrated programming theme that Birnam Arts are exploring in 2024 around Mothering/Parenting. Other work that engages with this theme includes ‘Family Portrait’ immersive film installation by Barrowland Ballet, a performance by poet Hollie McNish as part of her new book tour ‘Lobster’ and ‘Beyond Expectations’ exhibition and the associated workshops and events by Jo Foo.

We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.

Welcome to Birnam Arts, a boutique multi-purpose arts, conferencing and entertainment venue.
Pop in to the Foyer Cafe for breakfast, grab a delicious coffee with a selection of our homemade baking or enjoy a light lunch whilst browsing on the free WiFi. Wander upstairs to view the latest of our monthly art exhibitions before visiting the world of Beatrix Potter, or the Gift Shop to purchase a special gift for your loved ones or yourself!
I just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for everyone's support in the planning and delivery of our Perthshire Artisan's event at Birnam Arts. The space was ideal, the food delicious and it was great to be back in real life!
