For our signature Saturday night blend of words and music, film-maker and author Grant McPhee chronicles the transformation of the Scottish Indie music scene through the ‘90s, chatting about how Scotland rebuilt its contemporary musical landscape. A roster of new sounds emerged during that decade, including Lung Leg. This legendary pop-punk/indie band joins us for a special performance, straight from the pages of Grant’s acclaimed oral history. Re-discover your inner riot grrrl or garage-pop dude!
Lung Leg formed in Glasgow in 1994. They were part of the city's DIY underground scene, blending post-punk, C86, and riot grrrl, recording various EPs, an LP for Vesuvius, Guided Missile, Kill Rock Stars and Southern Records and two sessions for John Peel, alongside touring the UK and the USA with The Make-Up, Fugazi, and opening for Sonic Youth.
Joining original members Jane Egypt and Annie Spandex are Paul Thompson, Simone Antigone and Hando Morice with Kelly Kyle completing the new line up.
They released their first 7" in 27 years last October, "Girls" on Errol's Hotwax/Watts of Goodwill, a limited edition split 7" with Unmarry Me (formerly Huggy Bear). A new album is pencilled in for 2027.

Pop in to the Foyer Cafe for breakfast, grab a delicious coffee with a selection of our homemade baking or enjoy a light lunch whilst browsing on the free WiFi. Wander upstairs to view the latest of our monthly art exhibitions before visiting the world of Beatrix Potter, or the Gift Shop to purchase a special gift for your loved ones or yourself!
We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.

Birnam Arts has made such a difference to Birnam since its redevelopment 20 years ago, and attracts an incredible variety of high-quality arts performers. It's also a great Community space. We're very happy to make a contribution to such an asset.
