Join Perthshire artist Ronald Forbes for an illustrated talk exploring the ideas, influences and processes behind his work, alongside a screening of his recent film Hello and Goodbye.
Born and raised in rural Perthshire, Forbes’ upbringing has had a lifelong influence on his interests and ideas. His observation of the urban view of country life led him to explore the ways in which we perceive and express our understanding of the world, and the place of nature within that narrative.
His work explores illusion, belief and reality – and the often-fuzzy edges between them. Through paintings, drawings, prints and films, Forbes has developed a distinctive visual language of illusionistic collage, bringing together fragments of images that at first appear familiar and coherent, but which, on closer inspection, reveal their disparate sources and create a new reality.
The talk will also reflect on key moments in his career, including his time as Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the James Hutton Institute (then the Scottish Crop Research Institute) in Invergowrie between 2006 and 2008. This research informed De Rerum Natura: The Nature of Things, an exhibition of paintings and film that toured Scotland and was shown at Perth Art Gallery and Museum in 2011.
A distinguished artist, educator and academician, Forbes was Head of Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design until leaving higher education in 2002 to devote himself fully to his studio practice. He is a Royal Scottish Academician (RSA), an elected member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI), and a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists.
This event offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into the development of a sustained and internationally respected artistic practice, and will be of particular interest to artists, students and anyone interested in contemporary art, perception and the natural world.
