An Evening with Elizabeth Kostova is a must-attend for readers, writers, book lovers, thinkers, and listeners.
Elizabeth Kostova is the best-selling author of The Historian, The Swan Thieves, and The Shadow Land. She is also Dunkeld and Birnam's Writer in Residence from our twin community of Asheville, North Carolina.
Ours is the first community to partner Asheville Sister Cities in this new initiative. As Elizabeth's residency nears its end, we spend an evening in her company to hear new writing from her special guests. We delve into Elizabeth’s imagination and travel with her to locations in Bulgaria and the lesser known corners of Eastern Europe that have inspired her storytelling. Also, Elizabeth offers a preview of her atmospheric new novel Mystery Play, to be published later this year.
Kostova's first novel The Historian, made it to number one on the New York Times' Best Seller List in 2005, the first debut novel to do so at that time. The book has since been translated into 40 languages. She reads and lectures internationally and is co-founder of The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation which provides competitive opportunities for Bulgarian writers and translators, as well as opportunities for native-English writers to travel to Bulgaria.
This event is a fundraiser for the Birnam Book Festival.
Reviews:
"In 2005, I read a book so laden with longing that I could not put it down: The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova." Bethanne Patrick, for NPR
A review of her novel, The Shadow Land,
"Kostova is a cear-headed, elegant writer with a sneaky gift for incorporating the history and culture of a place into the nooks and crannies of a book that never feels bossy or expository."
