Woody Guthrie – Old Man Trump with Will Kaufman

Woody Guthrie – Old Man Trump
with Will Kaufman
Friday 18th January 7.30pm
£12/£10/£5 U26s

Friday 18th January

In December 1950, Woody Guthrie moved his family into a new apartment in Brooklyn’s Beach Haven. His new landlord it turned out, was none other than Fred Trump, father of the US president. Over 60 years later, Donald Trump would proclaim on the campaign trail: “My legacy is my father’s legacy” - Woody had his own, very strong opinions on what would be Fred Trump’s legacy.

In 2014 Will Kaufmann discovered, buried in the archives, Guthrie’s previously unpublished song lyrics and other writings on his perception of Fred Trump - he’s now turned these discoveries into a music and spoken-word presentation.

Kaufman – singer, multi-instrumentalist, and Professor of American Studies, is recognised as the world’s leading authority on Woody Guthrie. He is the author of Woody Guthrie, American Radical (2011), Woody Guthrie’s Modern World Blues (2017) and Mapping Woody Guthrie (forthcoming 2019).

In WOODY GUTHRIE AND “OLD MAN TRUMP” we hear Woody Guthrie speaking and singing from beyond the grave, bringing to life all the heartfelt anger and contempt that he felt.

“No one can understand the American people without listening to Woody Guthrie. Will Kaufman's doing important work here”. TOM PAXTON

The Ghosting of Rabbie Burns

The Ghosting of Rabbie Burns
by Gillian Duffy, starring James Mackenzie and Morna Young
Wednesday 23rd January
£12/£10/£5 U26s

Heartbroken author Ariel Winters takes herself away to her aunt’s old cottage in Ayrshire to get over her cheating ex. As she celebrates Burns night alone, wishing that the right man would show up, she gets a visitation slightly different than what she’d hoped for. The ghost of Rabbie Burns appears to give her some dating advice – and he knows what he’s talking about!

Featuring the great songs and poems of Burns, such as ‘My Love is Like a Red Red Rose’, ‘Ae Fond Kiss’, ‘Charlie is my Darlin’ and of course ‘Auld Lang Syne’, this hilarious new comedy proves that love and relationships haven’t changed that much in 200 years after all.

“Gillian Duffy’s writing takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotion”

Whiskey Shivers

Whiskey Shivers
Saturday 2nd February, 8pm
£12/£10/£5 U26s

A diverse group of masterfully talented musicians who stand out like a sore thumb from the traditional bluegrass world, WHISKEY SHIVERS have made a name for themselves with a genre-pushing sound that the Washington Post called “Apocalyptic Americana”. Frontman and fiddle master, Bobby Fitzgerald’s exuberance is contagious, and it bleeds through… crowds notice this lot. Fitzgerald says “Whiskey Shivers isn’t just the five of us on stage, it’s everybody in the room.”

The band members also landed a role in the film Pitch Perfect 3, which hit cinemas in December 2017, appearing both in acting and musical roles, alongside a returning cast that included Anna Kendrick, Hailee Steinfeld and Rebel Wilson. The big screen is the perfect place for Whiskey Shivers - an eclectic, charismatic gang of characters, they had their first major breakout when their horror-movie influenced music video went viral.

“The fierce inertia of Old Crow Medicine Show, the ramshackle folk punch of Felice Brothers and the punk energy of a pre-sobriety Deer Tick.”  ROLLING STONE

Space Base: The Secrets of Space
With Generation Science
Wednesday 13th February
Ages 7-12yrs

SPACE BASE: SECRETS OF SPACE is a planetarium show that explores the wonders of our solar system, the scope and scale of the universe and our place within it. Starting with the movements of the sun across the sky, you’ll find out how scientists historically observed the movement of stars and planets to create theories about the formation of the solar system.

After exploring the solar system in more detail - our solar system’s structure has a star (our sun) at the centre, with planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets and satellites all moving in approximately circular paths around it -  we’ll then look at how scientists observe celestial bodies today. Lots of interesting facts and interesting things to look at!
