Karen Marshalsay

Description:

Karen Marshalsay
Friday 8th November
7.30pm
£12/£10/£5 U26s + £1 Booking Fee

A concert with a difference - one of Scotland’s leading harpers, Karen Marshalsay, has just released a new album of traditional harp music and original compositions, The Road to Kennacraig on Cramasie Records.

Karen’s a master of all three Scottish harps – the warm sounding modern gut-strung Lever Harp which is her workhorse, the clear ringing wire-strung Clarsach of the Highlands and Gaelic culture and the Baroque Bray Harp with its buzzing sitar-like effect – and she features each of them across the Kennacraig album.

In a recent interview with London Jazz News, Karen said she “wants listeners to be moved… absorbed by the music and leave uplifted”, and described the pieces as a “variously sad, thoughtful… strong and celebratory, and a bit mischievous at times.” – Karen will be featuring the album songs in this gig… a real treat for anyone who appreciates Scottish traditional music.

In addition to this concert, Karen will be taking her harp to the local school to encourage children’s interest in the instrument – date TBA.

As well as appearing in solo concerts, Karen is currently a member of Irish folk music legend, flute and whistle master and singer Cathal McConnell’s Trio and has also produced new works for Celtic Connections’ New Voices series, Hands up for Trad’s Distil showcase concerts.

Harper Karen Marshalsay sets out her stall beguilingly with her title composition – notes plucked from wire-strung clasarch, hanging in the air before morphing into rippling piobaireachd-style variations. JIM GLICHRIST: THE SCOTSMAN****
