And Then Come The Nightjars – Double Bill…

We've a really exciting double bill of theatre drama coming to Birnam Arts this week with back-to-back performances of And Then Come The Nightjars on Wednesday 26th & Thursday 27th of April.

Set in rural South Devon in 2001 at the height of the Foot & Mouth crisis, the play centres on the relationship between Jeff, the local vet & Michael a local dairy farmer...

The two men have a begrudging respect for each other and a blossoming friendship based on sharing a fag, a nip of whisky and boisterous banter.

But when Foot and Mouth sweeps through the British countryside, communities are thrown into chaos. Michael watches, in grief stricken disbelief, the shooting of his beloved cows. He also watches his friend brandish the gun.

South Devon, 2001. Jeff is a vet with a problem. Michael is a cattle farmer who is a problem. The two men have a begrudging respect for each other and a blossoming friendship based on sharing a fag, a nip of whisky and boisterous banter. But when Foot and Mouth sweeps through the British countryside, throwing communities into chaos with the slaughter of thousands of cattle, Michael watches the shooting of his own beloved cows in grief stricken disbelief… he also watches his friend brandish the gun.

In turns heart-breaking and hilarious, And Then Come The Nightjars is both a tender portrait of male friendship and a requiem to rural life.

“A  touching play of love and loss…savagely  funny  and  sad… beautifully observed” The  Guardian (on Theatre 503)
